The Lake of the Ozarks Shootout is the largest unsanctioned boat race in the United States and has been voted as the number 1 boat race/shootout in the Country by the Powerboat Magazine Readers for the last two years. It has also been listed by Powerboat Magazine as one of the 8 "must see" boating events. Official speeds at the Captain Ron's course have hit as high as 208 mph. New radar guns in 2012 proved to be extremely accurate for the racers.
Despite rain moving in on Saturday afternoon and continuing on and off on Sunday, all runs were made. A blazing speed of 192 by Greg Olson in his 33 foot Eliminator Daytona proved to everyone that becoming TOP GUN is never out of reach. Greg came out of retirement just a week prior to the race and amazed the crowd with his winning run on Saturday. "I never dreamed I would become TOP GUN", commented Greg during the awards ceremony. Shortly after, he again announced his retirement. This certainly sets up an exciting 25th anniversary in 2013 as a new TOP GUN will be crowned. Retirement is never what it's cracked up to be!!
The 24th Anniversary of the Shootout was an event that will always be remembered. Number 100 was everywhere during the week of events and with Big Thunder in its usual spot on the Poly Lift boat lift at the end of Dock 6 and Sue and the crew on the property, it seemed at times like it was just another Shootout. However, with three different flyovers with the missing man formation, it was a sober remembrance that a couple of Shootout favorites, Bob Morgan and Jeff "J.T." Tillman would never again grace the steps of the Shootout property. "Their presence was felt all weekend and as the grey skies parted on Sunday morning to allow the racers just a few more runs, I knew they were watching", Ron Duggan reflected. "As I paid one last respect to Bob and J.T. and officially closed the event Sunday afternoon, the skies opened up and gave us a downpour that we hadn't seen all summer. I knew they were by my side waiting for me to finish. It was something that will always live with me."
